Dr. Zahida Khan is a physician-scientist that has longstanding clinical and research interests in pediatric liver diseases. She is a pediatric transplant hepatologist and Assistant Professor of Pediatrics. Dr. Khan specializes in the medical care of children before and after liver transplant, and treats patients with acute and chronic liver diseases. In addition to inpatient Liver service and outpatient clinics, she also performs routine procedures including endoscopies.
Dr. Khan received her Bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry from Simmons College in Boston, Massachusetts. She then attended the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine’s Medical Scientist Training Program, obtaining her PhD in Cellular and Molecular Pathology and her MD in Medicine. She also earned a graduate certificate in Cellular Approaches to Tissue Engineering and Regeneration from the McGowan Institute for Regenerative Medicine, for her dissertation work on hypoxia in liver regeneration. Dr. Khan completed her Pediatrics internship and residency training at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center in Ohio, followed by fellowships in Pediatric Gastroenterology at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, and Advanced Pediatric Transplant Hepatology at Texas Children’s Hospital, Baylor College of Medicine.
Prior to joining the faculty of MCW, she held positions as a pediatric hepatologist at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, and a pediatric bone marrow transplant hospitalist at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital. Dr. Khan’s research lab investigates critical cellular pathways for liver regeneration and metabolism, and she plans to extend these by developing cellular and molecular therapies for liver-based metabolic diseases.
