Guidelines for parents
We will treat you with respect. Please treat us with respect. Hospital polices must be followed. Aggressive or threatening behavior is not allowed.
Cell phones are allowed in the hospital. They do not pose a significant risk of interference with medical devices. Taking pictures with a camera of anyone other than your child is not allowed. Please respect the privacy of others. Phone chargers are available for use in the Daniel M. Soref Family Resource Center.
Lounges are available for use by family members throughout the hospital and in The Daniel M. Soref Family Resource Center. Each lounge has at least one computer for families to use (see “Computer use” on the General information page for more information).
Food storage and use of unit refrigerator
Food items kept in your child’s room must be packaged to prevent attracting bugs. Foods that are brought in and need refrigeration must be dated and labeled with your child’s name. Refrigerators are located in the family lounges on the inpatient units. There are no in-room refrigerators. Use labels from your child’s care provider to place on your personal food. Staff follow health safety guidelines and will throw away any food that is not labeled or has been in the refrigerator longer than 48 hours. Children’s Hospital will not replace food that is discarded for this reason.
Identification badges must be worn at all times by family members and visitors in the hospital
A parent/grandparent/guardian badge will be given only to adults who are directly responsible for the patient. All inpatient families are asked to create a visitor list. A visitor badge will be given to every other person who is on the visitor list. Badges are available at any of the Welcome Centers. Badges also are available at nurses’ stations. A new badge is needed every day. Badges must be worn. Badges can be turned in at a Welcome Center when you leave.
Leaving your child’s room
Ask your child’s care provider before taking your child for a walk inside or outside the hospital. Public areas for walking are located on the first floor of the hospital, the Noel Family Healing Garden and the lower level of the hospital near the dining room. You should not walk through other patient care areas. Please respect the privacy of other patients when walking around the hospital.
If you cannot find your child, notify a hospital employee. We understand children wander or do not tell parents where they are going. We have a process in place to find your child.
Being at Children’s Hospital with a sick or injured child can be stressful. Occasionally, situations bring in the news media. Let the hospital media relations team help you handle these calls. Keep the following in mind if you are called by a reporter:
- You do not have to talk to reporters.
- You do not owe them an interview.
- Even if you promised someone an interview, it is okay to change your mind.
- Do not arrange interviews on your own. Hospital policy requires reporters to be with a media relations specialist at all times. Call (414) 266-5420 for help.
- Security Services staff is required to ask all unaccompanied reporters to leave the hospital.
A weekday edition of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel is available in the Daniel M. Soref Family Resource Center. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and USA Today also are available in the newspaper box in the skywalk between the hospital and clinics building.
In certain situations, pagers are available if you need to leave the hospital for short periods. Ask your child’s nurse for more information.
Click here to access a list of helpful phone numbers. You may use patient or in-house phones to call hospital departments. Dial the last five digits of any hospital telephone number starting with 266 or 337. To call someone outside the hospital, dial 9 before the number. Long-distance calls can be made using a calling card. If you hear a message that the telephone has been restricted, the hospital operator can help you.
Children’s Hospital is a smoke-free environment. Children’s Hospital does not permit the use of any tobacco products, or smokeless or “spit” tobacco on our property. This includes all property owned, leased or operated by the hospital. This includes buildings, grounds, streets, sidewalks, parking lots and structures. Ask staff if you need more information.
To provide the health care staff with a view of patients, some rooms have cameras. If you have questions, contact your child’s care provider.
Weapons or firearms are not allowed on our properties.
