10 things to look for when choosing an urgent care clinic for your child

Kids’ illnesses and accidents don’t always happen during regular primary care office hours. When your child is under the weather and needs medical care quickly, an urgent care clinic can provide the care and treatment your child needs. However, with so many options available, you want to feel confident that you’re making the right choice when selecting an urgent care clinic for your child.

How to choose an urgent care clinic

Below are the top 10 things to look for when choosing an urgent care clinic for your child, along with an explanation of why I think you should consider Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin.

1. Convenience

Our clinics are open evenings and weekends, when your primary care doctor’s office is closed, including one clinic that is open on holidays. We currently have four locations in the Milwaukee area, and appointments are never needed.

2. Quality

Our clinics are staffed by board-certified pediatricians and specially trained advanced practice nurse practitioners. Our team is dedicated to quality improvement and evidence-based medicine to treat your child with the best pediatric care in the area.

3. Board-certified pediatric care

We always have a pediatrician available at each site. As pediatricians, we are well equipped to treat the more complex problems that children often experience, such as cuts, sprains or fractures, infections, concussions, or trouble breathing.

4. Kid-friendly staff

Our staff is specially trained to work with children of any age. We love working with kids. It’s all we do! We have the only urgent care clinics in the Milwaukee area dedicated solely to children.

5. Cost and time savings

Compared to an emergency room visit, charges and co-pays are almost always less with urgent care. Wait times are also usually shorter. However, if your child has a serious injury or illness and needs emergency care, call 911 or take them straight to the nearest emergency department.

6. Connected care

We work with your child’s health care team, including your primary care doctor, the emergency department, and specialists at Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin to coordinate treatment and follow-up care if needed.

7. Technology

Our clinics use a state-of-the-art electronic health record (EHR), which is the same used by the entire Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin system. This allows us to easily find and share information with your child’s care team.
