What to expect
Physical and occupational therapists will work with your young athlete in a 4,000-square-foot gym equipped with state-of-the-art equipment. These therapists are licensed health care professionals with advanced training in fitness and conditioning. Physical therapists use stretching and strengthening exercise to help patients improve balance, endurance, coordination and skills needed for specific sports. Occupational therapists specialize in upper-body injuries. They also develop exercises to help patients recover after a concussion. This may involve managing vision problems, head and neck pain and loss of balance.
Therapists evaluate each patient to decide what type of therapy is best. After the first session, they develop a customized treatment plan. Therapists talk with a child’s family and primary care doctor to set specific goals.
Sports therapy helps young athletes return to sports and other physical activities by focusing on:
- Range of motion
- Competitive performance
- Proper nutrition and hydration
Ask your child’s doctor if sports therapy might be appropriate for your young athlete.
