Pediatric neurosurgery board certification
If your child's doctor refers him/her to a neurosurgeon, you may have choices in which neurosurgeon to see. We recommend that all children, from newborn to age 18, consult with a pediatric neurosurgeon who has completed an approved pediatric neurosurgery fellowship and is pediatric board certified/board eligible. All of the pediatric neurosurgeons at Children's Hospital of Wisconsin are certified by the American Board of Pediatric Neurological Surgery (ABPNS).
Pediatric neurosurgery is a subspecialty of neurosurgery specializing in the diagnosis, evaluation, and treatment of neurosurgical conditions specific to children. Additional formal training after a neurosurgical residency is required to attain the expertise necessary to be a pediatric neurosurgeon. The ABPNS is the accreditation authority for pediatric neurological surgery in the United States and Canada, requiring the neurosurgeon to have completed a full residency in neurosurgery, a post-residency approved fellowship, and achieved certification by the ABPNS. A pediatric board-certified neurosurgeon has the additional training to provide the highest level of neurosurgical care to children.
The pediatric neurosurgeons at Children's Hospital of Wisconsin have:
- completed a one-year fellowship in Pediatric Neurological Surgery at a program accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pediatric Neurosurgery Fellowships;
- achieved board certification in general neurosurgery by the American Board of Neurological Surgery;
- demonstrated a pediatric-focused surgical practice;
- passed a formal examination given by the ABPNS
With our additional training and expertise, we help create a comprehensive care plan and team with other pediatric specialists for the best and safest care for your child. Our extensive and complete training, together with focus on the pediatric population, allows us to provide a better experience for you and your child and to create superior outcomes.
