What about FluMist?

For the last two years one type of flu vaccine, FluMist, was unavailable. It’s back this year, but there are some important things you should know before choosing the FluMist.

What vaccine does Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin recommend this year?

Children’s looked at all the information and suggestions from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and the Center for Disease Control (CDC). Children’s recommends the flu shot this year. Our Primary Care clinics will also be offering FluMist. This treatment is an acceptable alternative, especially if you wouldn’t get the shot. Children’s will track which types of flu virus are making people sick this season, and how well the FluMist and flu shot work this year.

Why was FluMist unavailable for the last few years?

FluMist was unavailable because it did not protect against one type of flu virus. FluMist did work well against other types of flu viruses.

How effective is FluMist this year?

How well the flu vaccine works changes every year. How well it works is based on the type of virus in the vaccines, and that is present in the community. FluMist contains a new type of flu virus this year. Testing suggests that it should work better this year, but it has not been used yet during a flu season in the United States.

Who should not receive FluMist?

Some children should not get the FluMist because of age, certain health conditions, or other reasons. Most of these people should get the flu shot instead. Your health care provider can help you decide.
