Disorders affecting the thyroid

The production of thyroid hormone by the thyroid is controlled by a hormone from the brain called thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH). If there are problems with production of TSH, or the thyroid itself makes too much or too little thyroid hormone, then thyroid disorders occur.

Because thyroid hormone helps control metabolism, metabolism can slow down with low thyroid hormone levels making a child tired, cold, and even grow slowly. On the other hand, high thyroid hormone levels can speed up metabolism, so kids can feel hot, have a high heart rate, and possibly lose weight. Either low or high thyroid function can affect school performance.

Listed in the directory below, you will find additional information regarding hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism.
